CLASS V : THE GLOBE
A. EARTH
I) Composition of Earth :
1. Water - Approximately 71% of Earth's surface is water, but 97 percent of that is salty ocean.
2. Land - About 29% of Earth's surface is land.
II) Shape of Earth :
Earth is a sphere that is slightly flattened at the pole.
B. GLOBE
1. What is a globe? How is it useful?
Ans- A globe is a simple and accurate model of the earth.
It is useful because:
i) It shows the distribution of land and water on the surface of the Earth.
ii) It shows the correct shape, size and location of the continents and oceans.
2. Types of globe:
• The normal globe- These are big in size, not easy to carry everywhere and has a stand and axis around which it can be rotated.
• The pocket globe – These are small sized globes which are easy to carry.
• The inflated globe – These globes look like balloons which can be blown
up to use and then inflated after using.
3. Advantage and Disadvantage of globe:
C. AXIS
1. What is axis?
Ans- Axis is an imaginary line passing through the middle of the
earth around which it rotates.

D. LINES OF LATITUDE
◾Arctic Circle - 66 1/2°N
◾Tropic of Cancer - 23 1/2°N
◾Equator - 0°
i) Equator is an imaginary line of
latitude at 0°.
ii) It is the biggest latitude on
globe.
iii) It runs through the middle of the
globe, dividing it into two halves or
hemispheres.
◾Tropic of Capricorn - 23 1/2°S
◾Antarctic Circle - 66 1/2°S
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
E. LINES OF LONGITUDE
i) The line of longitude which passes through Greenwich near London in the U.K. is called the Prime Meridian. Th
is base line has 0°.
ii) It divides the globe into two hemisphere again, namely, the Eastern hemisphere and the Western hemisphere.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
G. GRID
1. What is grid and how is it helpful?
Ans- The latitudes and longitudes which intersect each other at right angles form a
network called grid.
It helps in locating places on the globe.
